Sustainability at Panaga School
At Panaga School, our vision of “Together, Improving Learning” extends beyond the classroom to the world around us. We believe that Education for Sustainable Development (EfSD) is essential in shaping internationally-minded students who are equipped to make a positive impact on the world.
Our approach to sustainability is holistic, integrating environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and global citizenship into our daily school life.
Sustainability at Panaga is guided by a dedicated whole-school framework that aligns our curriculum with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From the Early Years through to Melilas, we ensure that our students do not just learn about the environment – they learn how to lead and protect it.
Key Initiatives
- The Green Flag Journey: We are committed to the Eco-Schools program, working through rigorous audits and action plans to achieve and maintain Green Flag Status. This process empowers our students to lead change in our school’s operations and physical environment.
- Student Leadership (The Eco Team): Student voice is at the heart of our mission. Our student-led Eco Teams take ownership of environmental initiatives, ensuring that sustainability is driven by the passion and creativity of our learners.
- Student Leadership (Wildlife Warriors): Wildlife Warriors is a dedicated student-led environmental group committed to protecting our planet. Working in partnership with a local school, they help educate the wider community about reducing single-use plastic. Through awareness campaigns, creative projects, and community outreach, they inspire positive change and encourage everyone to take action for a more sustainable future.
- Outdoor Learning: Leveraging our unique location in Brunei, we utilise outdoor learning to foster a deep, personal connection with nature.
- Community service: As part of our wider community service commitment, students take part in meaningful initiatives that support both people and the environment. Events such as the Bird Race, termly beach cleans, and a Ramadan food drive allow pupils to give back to the local community while protecting local wildlife and natural spaces.
Sustainable Practices in Action
We lead by example through practical, school-wide policies designed to reduce our ecological footprint:
- Plastic Reduction: We actively monitor and implement policies to reduce single-use plastics at all school events and within our daily routines.
- Community Partnerships: We collaborate with local NGOs and international NGOs, local schools, Brunei Government departments, and international networks like Eco-FOBISIA and Compass Education to share best practices and participate in local environmental efforts, such as beach cleans and the construction of reef balls.
- Curriculum Integration: Using the UK National Curriculum and the IPC, teachers include EfSD links across all subjects, ensuring that sustainability is a thread that runs through every child’s education.
- After School Activities (ASA): many of our ASAs are closely linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and provide meaningful opportunities for students to take action beyond the classroom. Initiatives such as Forest School, Eco Creators Club, Wildlife Warriors Club, and Cubs nurture environmental stewardship, teamwork, and community responsibility. Through hands-on experiences, outdoor learning, conservation projects, and creative sustainability challenges, students develop the knowledge, skills, and values needed to become informed and active global citizens.
